Montana State High School/Middle School Mountain Bike Championships
Race is on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 11am
Registration: Located at the Granite County High School, starting at 9am. Registration will close at 10:45am.
Directions: Via Hwy 1 from Anaconda, take the right turn prior to town which directs to downtown Philipsburg. About two miles, just past the old railroad underpass, on the left is the school. Do not go to the school with the tall clock tower, that's the elementary school, the HS is just to the south. From Hwy 1 from Drummond, take the main turn into Philipsburg, just past the Sunshine Station (Sinclair gas station) and go to the four-way stop and blinking stop light; turn right up the hill. At the top of the hill, on the right are the schools.
Cost: Register will be at the High School and is $20 for a high school or $20 for a middle school or $5 for individuals.
At 11am, the State Middle School and High School State Championships will be held. Bring along some junior racers!! Middle School (grades 6, 7, and 8) start (20 minute race) at 11am and the High School starts (30 minute race) at 11:30. One letter from the school listing riders and verifying grade will be required. Course (counter-clockwise direction on the map) will not be technical and will be multiple laps on a spectator friendly course. Only MTBs will be allowed, 26” tires, no cyclocross or road bikes. It is, after all, the MTB Championships. Helmets will be required, of course. State Championship Medals will be awarded for the top Male and Female from each category as well as the best Male (top three times) and Female (top two time) Team and top three scores (two males and one female) from each school for the overall school award. Riders do not need to be USAC licensed.
Race is a licensed race with USA Cycling (www.usacyclig.org). USA Cycling is the national organization that oversees road, mountain bike, and track racing in the US and is responsible for competing in international events.
This race is for everyone. The teams with the most racers has an advantage and everyone will finish. No expertise in technical MTB racing is required. The course is about 1 mile long and is on dirt roads and across a soft field. Literally everyone can complete this race. Racers will make multiple loops on the same course. Schools should send as many students they can.
For those who want to really test their cycling ability, there will be a Mountain Bike race in the afternoon. Juniors (U-19) race for free but the course is 5.25 miles long and harder. This is a technically hard course and good equipment is recommended.
